Sciatica is not a medical condition itself; rather, it is a symptom of an underlying issue in your lower back. The sciatic nerve is the longest and thickest nerve in your body. It originates in the lumbar spine (lower back), branches through the hips and buttocks, and travels down each leg.
When something compresses, pinches, or inflames the nerve roots that form the sciatic nerve, it sends abnormal signals down that nerve pathway.
Common Symptoms of Sciatic Nerve Pain
- Radiating Pain: A dull ache, burning sensation, or sharp Jolt that travels from the lower back down one side of the buttock, thigh, calf, or foot.
- Numbness & Tingling: A "pins-and-needles" sensation in your leg or toes.
- Muscle Weakness: Difficulty lifting your foot (foot drop) or heaviness in the leg when walking.
- Position-Specific Discomfort: Pain that worsens when sitting for long periods, coughing, sneezing, or bending forward.
